Summer in Las Vegas can be difficult for seniors: It’s hard to get outside because of the extreme heat; but it’s no fun being stuck inside all summer, either. Here are some things you and your loved ones can do this steamy season, in spite of the heat!
1. Take a class
This may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a fun summer activity, but taking a class could be a great opportunity. There are many senior centers throughout the city that offer a variety of classes such as art, film, computer skills, cooking, dance, and aerobics. There’s plenty to choose from, so there’s bound to be something your loved one would enjoy.

2. Go for a swim
Who doesn’t love being in the water on a hot summer day? Seniors can enjoy any pool or water park in Southern Nevada for only $1, making this an option that’s also easy on the budget. Many senior centers and community pools also offer activities such as water aerobics to help you stay active.
3. Explore a farmer’s market
Healthy, fresh food is important for everyone, and there’s no better place to find it than at a farmer’s market! Make a day of it by getting what you need for dinner at the market and then cooking it together later on at home.
4. Take a walk
Walking is the easiest and most accessible form of exercise there is. Taking a walk can not only improve your health and help keep you physically and mentally sound as you age, but it also has an immediate positive effect on your mood. If you’d like to get out of your own neighborhood, there are many beautiful parks in Southern Nevada to enjoy–some of which offer guided walks–and people 62 and older can purchase a lifetime America the Beautiful pass for $10 that provides entry to all federal recreation sites such as Red Rock Canyon.
5. Visit a museum or art gallery
If you’d rather do something inside, consider visiting one of the many museums and art galleries in Southern Nevada such as the Las Vegas Natural History Museum, the National Atomic Testing Museum, or UNLV’s Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery. There are always senior discounts available, and most museums and galleries feature special exhibits alongside the regular displays.

6. See a movie
Besides the theaters that show the latest movies, some senior centers and libraries offer free showings of movies both old and new. Some places even have free popcorn when you visit!
7. Join a book club
Book clubs are a great way to expand your horizons: You’re introduced to books you might not have seen otherwise, and you get to discuss them with like-minded people. Staying mentally active is just as important for seniors as staying physically active, and a book club may do just the trick. There are many different book clubs in Southern Nevada, so check out the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District website to find one that meets near you.
8. Dance!
There are many different dance classes for seniors available in Southern Nevada. This can be a great way for the elderly to stay active while doing something pretty much everyone enjoys. Classes include ballroom, tap, swing, salsa, square dancing, and line dancing.
There’s no need for seniors to stay stuck inside in the summer! There are plenty of opportunities to get out of the house and have fun. When it’s time to get your loved one help with daily tasks and responsibilities in home, call Select Home Care at (877) 230-3160.
