When you bring a caregiver into the family to assist an elderly individual, compassion and compatibility are key. Select Home Care’s team is comprised of only the most devoted in the field. Here, Ventura, CA caregiver Jo Ann Lake tells us a little bit about herself:
1. How long have you been a caregiver?
I began taking care of a family friend in 1992. He was 75 years old and passed away at age 87. I also took care of my father in hospice. Then, my husband was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2005 and I took care of him. He’s still alive today. He has been stage 4 for five years now. In 2009, I decided to change careers and become a caregiver.
2. What attracted you to the caregiving profession?
I love getting to know new people and being able to help those who need it.
3. What is your favorite part about the job?
I love knowing that I can make a difference in the life of my client and my client’s children. Her children tell me how much they appreciate everything I do and that they know how much I love their mom. It’s nice knowing that I’ve helped them and I love seeing how happy my client is to see me each morning.
4. If you could give one piece of advice to other caregivers, what would it be?
In order to be a great caregiver, you have to be passionate, patient, and considerate. In some ways, the elderly are like children, so it’s important to always listen and show how much you care. Be their friend–not just an employee. Be very considerate and respectful of their feelings.
5. What sort of training did you have to undergo in order to become a caregiver?
Select Home Care gives hands-on training. We also have “In the Know” monthly reports.
